WaySafer- Varroc for Road Safety
Road safety has been a major issue in India for several years now. According, to the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme report on Road Safety in India, 151,113 persons were killed in 449,002 road accidents in our country in the year 2019-2020. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway’s state-wise crash data of 2019, most of these accidents happen on accord of uneven roads, low-visibility and road-traffic violations such as drunk-driving, over-loading, over-speeding.
The human mind receives 85% of the information through the sense of sight, and scientifically vision decreases considerably in low-light. In relation to night-time driving the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (USA) states, that the number of fatal accidents on the road are three times more likely to happen at night compared to daytime.
CarIQ- Varroc’s telematics solution provider, which helps optimise individualized feedback driver behaviour basis historical driving action on the road- conducted a research to find the monthly safety average of vehicles being driven. India being a tropical country, experiences extended monsoons and heavy-rainfall in several areas, which leads to slippery roads and fog both of which make driving difficult. August, being a peak monsoon month, is reported to be the most unsafe month on the road. The reports show more road accidents in this month as rainfall reduces visibility making driving on roads more dangerous. January, however, was found to be the safest month. Considering this, we can safely conclude that drivers take their new year’s resolution to “reach home safe” pretty seriously. Driving at night was another major cause for increased accidents owing to the sharp glare caused by irresponsible use of high-beam headlamps at night
At Varroc, we believe in bringing technology to the table, to help drivers/riders battle road-safety violations and visibility concerns effectively. Most of our lighting products are equipped with LED technology, which enhances visibility, ensures durability and also reduces fuel consumption and emission.
Being global leaders for LED headlamps, delivering to OEMs like Bajaj, KTM, and Renault Nissan in India, we were the first to bring LED technology to Indian roads in 2016. Our R&D teams globally consistently work towards introducing new lighting technologies and ensuring better safety through the ‘Democratization’ of full-LED headlamps
Varroc’s Static Bending headlamps, work on the AFS (Advanced front-lighting System), which with the help of perception software analyses speed and road-environment to change the lighting pattern and illumination. It illuminates blind spots formed due to sharp turns, which helps reduce accidents at night
However, with technology today, we can do more than just be seen. In countries with erratic weather conditions, high pollution density, and low-visibility due to fog or snowfall, or low-light areas like under-ground parking spaces or dark alleyways, our DRL (Daytime Running Lights) system or the AHO (Automatic Headlamp On) is used to increase the vehicle’s visibility even during the day. This system is expected to reduce chances of an accident, as it switches on automatically in a vehicle when the ignition is turned on and works to illuminate the vehicle on a cloudy day.
In a metropolis, the use of street light is prevalent. The general practice is to switch on headlamps on a high beam instead of using a low beam. To tackle this misapplication of headlamps, we bring our Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) which works by switching off particular segments of the lighting pattern, making driving at night safer as it avoids blinding the approaching vehicle with a sharp high-beam. The perception software within the vehicle detects the approaching vehicle and immediately switches off segments that cause glare to avoid blinding the approaching driver . The ADB which has a crash avoidance potential between 57% to 74% has different levels of costs – from high-end Pixel solution like Micro LED, DMD, to low cost 3 segment versions of Opti-LED Matrix reflectors.
Our advanced technology of Road Projection system made using DMD/MEMS/DLP light engines allows drivers to provide safety signs for pedestrians and other vehicles on the road by showing warning signs like ‘safe-distance’ notices
At Varroc, we consistently focus our research and development to make products that are greener, safer, smarter, and connected. We believe in embracing the challenge and providing the right solution to avoid unwanted mishaps, and these modern lighting technologies can guarantee to bring forth an all-round change when on road.
